RSS Block
The RSS block is a standard WordPress block that has been designed to fit within the Torch theme. RSS feeds are used to pull headlines and other information from stories posted to another website. When the content on the source website is updated, the new information will dynamically populate onto your website.
- Create and embed a dynamic feed of headlines and excerpts from another website in your division
- Embed a dynamic feed of up-to-date, relevant news or story headlines from another university website, such as news.utk.edu or torchbearer.utk.edu
- WordPress automatically creates “archive pages” based on categories, tags, and dates. For example, news.utk.edu/2025/09/05/ and news.utk.edu/tag/college-of-arts-and-sciences/ are both examples of WordPress archive pages.
- These archive pages automatically generate the XML code to power an RSS feed
- To create the link for an RSS feed, simply visit a WordPress post archive page—for instance, news.utk.edu/category/arts-design/—and add the word “feed” after the trailing slash in the URL. In this case, the feed URL would be https://news.utk.edu/category/arts-design/feed
- Select the RSS block from the block inserter and paste the feed URL into the box provided
- You may adjust the default list of headlines using the RSS block settings.
- You can format the feed to display as a list, as two or three columns, or as a multi-row grid.
- You can choose to display author, date, and excerpt metadata along with the headlines.
- Headlines are formatted to link back to the source of the information.
- If you choose to display the RSS feed as columns or a grid, do not display more than three columns per row. Your readers will thank you.
